In an increasingly global world, schools are becoming meeting points for cultures, languages, and different ways of seeing and being. At Escola Lá Fora, we believe that every child and every family deserves an individual, attentive, and human-centered welcome that respects their journeys, stories, and identities.
Over the past few years, we have welcomed families from many parts of the world. This cultural and linguistic diversity is undoubtedly a great asset to our school community, but it also brings new challenges, particularly in terms of communication, educational expectations, and cultural references.
It was within this context that our partnership with Bridge to Portugal emerged—an organization specialized in intercultural integration, cultural mediation, and teaching Portuguese to foreigners.
Cultural differences go far beyond language. They are reflected in how families communicate, interpret rules, express emotions, and relate to the school. Without proper support, these differences can lead to misunderstandings, insecurity, or distance. Bridge to Portugal therefore acts as a strategic partner, helping transform these challenges into opportunities for growth, inclusion, and mutual learning—for both families and the educational team.
A partnership that began with staff training and a family workshop
Our relationship began in the 2024–2025 school year through training for the Escola Lá Fora team. This first step allowed us to develop a more conscious, objective, and empathetic perspective on the intercultural situations we encounter in our daily work.
With over 10 years of experience in cultural mediation, Inês, founder of Bridge to Portugal, helped us understand that many “problems” are, in fact, untranslated cultural differences. This practical and human approach had a profound impact on how we communicate, welcome, and support families.
As part of this partnership, we also organized an intercultural workshop for families in Ericeira, most of whom are international. The main goal of this session was to provide a better understanding of Portuguese culture, particularly in educational and relational contexts, by addressing questions raised by the families themselves and challenging some common misconceptions about school, childhood, and parenting in Portugal.
This moment proved essential in bringing families and school closer together, strengthening mutual trust and contributing to a smoother and more conscious integration of international families into the Escola Lá Fora community.
A structured welcoming model for international families
In the 2025–2026 school year, the partnership became formal. Together, we are developing a structured model for welcoming and integrating international families and children, designed to ensure a smooth, supported, and secure transition into school life.
This model goes far beyond learning the Portuguese language. Its focus is on:
-
building trust between school and family;
-
supporting cultural adaptation;
-
preventing conflicts and misunderstandings;
-
promoting children’s emotional well-being.
Direct support for families and the school community
Within this partnership, Bridge to Portugal provides:
-
intercultural training for school staff;
-
Portuguese as a Non-Native Language (PNNL/PLNM) classes;
-
individual cultural mediation and support;
-
intercultural training sessions and workshops for families.
This integrated support ensures that each family feels truly seen, understood, and supported, strengthening their sense of belonging within the school community.
Building bridges for a more inclusive education
At Escola Lá Fora, we believe that an inclusive school begins with how we welcome others. Our partnership with Bridge to Portugal reflects our commitment to a conscious, open-minded, and people-centered education.
By investing in intercultural integration from the very first contact with each family, we are laying strong foundations for the healthy development of every child.
Because education is also about building bridges—between languages, cultures, and people.
